Can the Eagles win 20-8 Friday?

By Erwin Lloyd

Local folks still may not know the exact location of Thayer Missouri, but they have learned a few

things about their football team: they had a few tricks up their sleeve and sure enjoyed carrying

the ball.

Electing to receive the opening kickoff, the visiting Bobcats surprised NMCC Eagle defenders

with a reverse handoff after the kick, which launched runner Clay Williams on a brisk 80-yard,

untouched jaunt into the end zone. Thirteen seconds into the first quarter it was Thayer 6 - NMCC 0.

With the Eagles unable to achieve a first down, the Bobcats' ground game kicked in with Cody Caldwell responding

on a one-yard scoring endeavor for a 14-0 score. Before the dust settled, Thayer blind-sided the Eagles with an onside

kick, which they covered. With 3 minutes remaining in the first quarter, the Bobcats scored again to lead 22-0. The

Eagles changed their strategy from running to passing in time for quarterback Brock Blakey to connect with Jacob

Keene on a 39-yard pass play, ending the quarter with a 22-6 score.

Having sudden success with their running game, Thayer continued to pound the ball through the Eagles line

gaining 349 rushing yards on 52 carries. Leading the parade was 155-pound junior Garrett Young, who registered

more than one half of all their yardage, who found the end zone three times, and who weighs the same as this writer.

Thayer only threw 5 passes; however, two resulted in touchdowns.

In the second quarter, Thayer tallied two more times, bringing the halftime score to 34-6. In the third quarter the

quick clock began as the Bobcats were adding two more TDs to the scoreboard and a 47-6 lead.

As the hot summer heat continued bearing down, the Eagles connected on an 18-yard aerial to Derrion Hill for

a score and with only 36 seconds remaining in the game Craig Beasley hit pay dirt on a 3-yard plunge. Thayer 54-

NMCC 20.

The Eagles will be returning to the field here at 7 p.m. Friday. Their opponent, the Dexter Bearcats, also will be

looking for their first seasonal win after losing last week to Poplar Bluff 48-8. May we both match last week's score

20-8!

"Winning a CHAMPIONSHIP is hard! That title will never lower

its standard to the weak, lazy or uncommitted! You must raise your

standard!" - Coach Dontre' Jenkins
