New Minister

- The New

Madrid Church of Christ

welcomed Jordan Blair and

his wife Erin as their new

minister.

Sandhill Cemetery

- The

Sandhill Cemetery located

on the north side of New

Madrid on Bloomfield Road

has long been neglected

but seems to be making a

comeback. The City of New

Madrid gave the cemetery a

face-lift with roads through

the cemetery, surrounding

growth and debris cleaned

up and a new flag pole is be-

ing erected. The site is the

final resting place for many

area family members many

of whom were veterans. It is

also a historic civil war loca-

tion.

Election Judges

- New

Madrid

County

Clerk

Clement Cravens prepared

the election judges for the

upcoming election utilizing

new equipment designed to

assist those who are physi-

cally handicapped.

Retiree

- Edna Ellington

retired after 35 years at As-

sociated Electric Coopera-

tive's New Madrid Power

Plant. She began her career

working for the purchas-

ing agent of the contrac-

tor building both the plant

and neighboring Noranda

Aluminum Inc. She joined

AECI as a secretary and

progressed through a series

of positions in the ware-

house and inventory control

and then became a senior

planning associate in main-

tenance planning.

Softball Champs - Taster's

softball team was the 9-12

Girl's Softball Tournament

Champion. Members of the

team were, Kristen Henry,

Kimberly Zuck, Ashley

Shaver, Shelby Lawrence,

Sophia Lott, Victoria Rob-

ins, Gerriann Henry, Sierra

Brown, Coach Candy Hen-

ry, Anna Ashby, Tynisha

say Shanks, Lindsey Fowler

and Coach Chris Henry.

- 40 Years Ago -

Oldest Tree in New Ma-

drid - The Department of

Conservation, State Revo-

lution Bi-centennial Com-

mission, the New Madrid

Bicentennial Commission

and the Lucy Jefferson Lew-

is Chapter, Daughters of

the American Revolution

had the marking of the old-

est tree in New Madrid;

which had a plaque des-

ignating it as the Official

Liberty Tree 215 years old.

The tree is Cherrybark Oak

on the property owned by

Mr. and Mrs. Charles La-

Valle at 431 Powell. The tree

was on the property sold

in 1881 by John E. Powell

to Catherine Davis. It has

survived through eight dif-

ferent owners. A certificate

was also presented to Mr.

and Mrs. Peter Rost for their

Cherrybark Oak which

was 203 years old. It was

on the property owned by

George Washington Daw-

son and Laura Amanda La-

Valle Dawson in the middle

1800's.

Auxiliary Police

- J.D.

Tisher was named Captain

of the New Madrid Auxil-

iary Police to succeed Billy

Pinnell, who has moved to

Sikeston, Roger Kirk was

promoted to first Lt and

John Rogers was Second Lt.
